
Tokyo confirmed 4,392 new cases of novel coronavirus infection on Sunday, the Tokyo metropolitan government said, a record number for that day of the week.
The daily tally was up by 97 from the previous Sunday.
The seven-day moving average increased 11% to 4,733, compared with 4,264 cases for the preceding seven-day period.
Seriously ill COVID-19 patients in the capital rose by one from Saturday to number 271, up by 20 from last Sunday. The deaths of eight patients, including a man in his 30s, were also confirmed.
Nationwide there were confirmed to be 1,891 seriously ill patients at the start of Sunday, marking a record high daily number for the 10th consecutive day, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.
