The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 4,377 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, up 1,765 from the same day last week and marking a record high for a Tuesday.
According to the metropolitan government, the number of severe patients in the capital rose by eight from Monday to 276, a record high for the eighth consecutive day, and eight people died with COVID-19, including two men in their 30s.
The seven-day moving average of new cases was 4,527, up 14% from 3,978 in the preceding seven-day period.
