Tokyo logged 2,884 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus on Monday, a record high for the day of the week.
The tally fell below 3,000 for the first time since last Monday, when it was 2,195.
The number of people seriously ill from COVID-19 in the capital rose by 6 from Sunday to 157.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the seven-day moving average of new cases was 4,135, up 28.7% from 3,214 during the preceding seven-day period.
