Tokyo infections trend downward week-on-week; at 2,909 new cases

Tokyo reported 2,909 new cases of novel coronavirus on Tuesday, down 1,311 from the same day last week.

The week-on-week figure has been lower for the ninth consecutive day.

The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients was 287, the same as the previous day.

According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the seven-day moving average of new cases was 3,521, down 24% from the previous period's 4,637.

It was also confirmed that 15 people in their 40s to 90s who contracted the virus have died.

Osaka Prefecture saw 2,347 cases on Tuesday, down 21 from a week earlier, the prefectural government said.

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said the number of seriously ill patients nationwide rose by 35 from Monday to 2,110 at the start of Tuesday, extending a record for 19 straight days.
