The Tokyo metropolitan government building was illuminated in blue, which is the color of World Diabetes Day in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo on Thursday.
World Diabetes Day was established by the United Nations in 2006 to commemorate the birthday of the Canadian doctor who discovered insulin used to treat diabetes. The lights were switched on at 6 p.m. and turned off at 11 p.m., and the same schedule was planned for Friday.
According to an estimate by the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, more than 10 million people are suspected of having diabetes nationwide.
"We hope [many more people] would have the right knowledge about diabetes and the importance of prevention," said a metropolitan government official.
