Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike expressed Tuesday her cautious position on lifting the coronavirus-related state of emergency, which is scheduled to expire Sunday.
The reduction in the number of the COVID-19 cases "is not on schedule," Koike told reporters Tuesday.
"There is an analysis that [the reduction] cannot catch up with the schedule unless [measures against the spread of infection] are stepped up by one gear," she added.
Koike's remarks came as Tokyo logged 232 new cases of the novel coronavirus Tuesday.
The moving average of new daily cases for the past week was 263.1, or 82.7 percent that of the previous week's average, 318.3.
The number of seriously ill patients as of Tuesday was 54, down by seven from Monday. It was the first time the number went below 60 since Dec. 10.
