Tickets for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are expected to go on sale in spring 2019, it has been learned.
The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games plans to sell the tickets on its official website and at dedicated ticket counters, according to sources. The committee intends to propose price settings to the International Olympic Committee's executive board in July for its approval.
The sales schedule for the Paralympics has yet to be finalized. An expert panel on ticket sales strategy was set up on Wednesday, and sales schedules were presented to committee members.
In the Tokyo Olympics, 339 events for 33 sports will be held, and 7.8 million tickets will be distributed, with the total value expected to be 77.3 billion yen.
The number of tickets to be issued will be the third-highest -- after 11 million for the 1996 Atlanta Games and 8.5 million for the 2012 London Games -- based on official IOC data released for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics onward.
In the Tokyo Paralympic Games, 537 events for 22 sports are planned, and 2.3 million tickets will be distributed. The total value is expected to be 4.7 billion yen.
These numbers, however, were set when Tokyo announced its bid to host the 2020 Olympics and do not include the numbers of tickets for sports added later, such as baseball and softball, as well as new events such as 3-on-3 basketball. The Tokyo committee is currently reviewing the number of seats at venues. The figures could therefore change in the future.
The value of tickets to the opening ceremony was the highest for the London and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, reaching about 290,000 yen and 160,000, yen respectively, in terms of exchange rates in February last year.
