The Tokyo Aquatics Centre, the venue for the swimming competitions at the Tokyo Games, held its debut competition when the Japan national championships kicked off there on Thursday.
The championships, which were originally scheduled for April and were to serve as a qualifier for the Olympics, were postponed because of the spread of the novel coronavirus. The competition, the first meet to be held at the center in Tokyo's Koto Ward, runs through Sunday.
The meet featured efforts to limit spread of the virus include a reduction of 300 athletes off last year's total down to about 400 this time.
Participants are required to wear masks right up to race time, and 11 large air purifiers have been installed at the venue. Disinfectant solution has also been placed in front of the starting blocks.
