The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced the design of the medals for winning athletes on Wednesday with the three themes of "light and brilliance," "energy of the athletes" and "diversity and harmony."

The medals shine beautifully from various angles. The design, by Junichi Kawanishi, 51, of Osaka, was chosen by a screening committee.

The gold medal weighs 556 grams and the silver medal weighs 550 grams, the heaviest for summer Games medals. They are 85 millimeters in diameter and up to 12.1 millimeters thick.

Raised bumps of silicon on the medals' ribbons will enable visually impaired athletes to easily distinguish gold, silver and bronze by touch. The medal case is made of tamo Japanese ash wood.

About 2,400 medals will be made for the Games, using metals extracted from used mobile phones and other devices. Production began in December last year and is set to be complete in May next year.
