The mascots of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games finally have their names -- Miraitowa and Someity.
The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games said Sunday that Miraitowa, the name given to the blue and white mascot, is a combination of the Japanese words "mirai," meaning future, and "towa," eternity. The committee said it named the mascot Miraitowa in the hope that a wonderful future would continue for all eternity.
The name of the pink and white Someity mascot comes from a combination of "some" from the someiyoshino cherry blossom variety and the English word mighty -- when read aloud it sounds similar to the English words "so mighty." The name expresses the "Japanese fondness for cherry blossoms and the strength of athletes," the committee said.
