The Finance Ministry on Tuesday announced that a poll will be conducted to select the design of a 500 yen coin that is part of a fourth series of coins commemorating the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
There are three sets of designs to choose from: Wind God and Thunder God; Mt. Fuji; and the National Olympic Stadium. The coins were designed specifically for the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games mainly by the Japan Mint
Votes can be cast via the ministry's Twitter account until June 24. Postcard votes will be accepted until July 1. Postcards must be postmarked by the deadline. Also, ballot boxes will be set up at the Tokyo metropolitan government building and other locations.
The winning design will be announced in July, and the coin will be issued in July 2020.
Meanwhile, the ministry has disclosed the designs for the third batch of Tokyo Games commemorative coins. They include a 10,000 yen gold coin, four types of 1,000 yen silver coins and five types of 100 yen coins. The third batch will be issued sequentially from January next year. The 10,000 yen coin -- with a sales price of 122,223 yen -- is engraved with three characters meaning "spirit," "technique" and "physical strength."
