Tokyo Games athletes from abroad to log health data via app

The government will require athletes and others participating in the Tokyo Games from overseas to use a smartphone app to keep track of and manage their health. The government plans to put the app to practical use later this month.

According to the Cabinet Secretariat, athletes and other participants from abroad will input their body temperature into the app every day and report whether they are showing symptoms of COVID-19, such as a sore throat or a cough. The information will be sent to the Tokyo Games organizing committee to quickly detect those who are in poor health.

The app will also make it unnecessary for them to submit documents at quarantine, immigration or customs if required information is entered into the app. Users will only need to show a QR code.

The app includes a search function so athletes and participants can find medical institutions that will provide them with certificates verifying a negative PCR test result, as well as other documents they may need prior to returning home. Appointments at an institution can also be made through the app.
