Tokyo elementary schools hold entrance ceremonies for new students amid pandemic

Many elementary schools in Tokyo held entrance ceremonies for new students on Tuesday, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Similar to last year, schools took various measures to avoid infections, such as decreasing the number of people allowed to partake in the ceremonies.

At Katsushika Elementary School in Katsushika Ward, 62 new students, all wearing masks, attended the ceremony. The first-year students looked tense as they entered the school's gym and sat on chairs spaced one meter apart to avoid crowding.

The school allowed two people per student, such as their parents, to participate in the event. Neither guests nor older students attended the ceremony.

Singing of the school anthem was canceled last year but, this year, the participants sang it while wearing masks.

"To avoid contracting the coronavirus, please follow the new rules, such as wearing a mask and washing your hands with soap many times," the school's principal said.
