Tokyo logged 2,962 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus on Monday, up by 78 from the previous week and reaching a record high for the day of the week.
The number of people seriously ill from COVID-19 in the capital rose by 17 from Sunday to 268, marking an all-time high for the seventh consecutive day.
The seven-day moving average of new cases was 4,275, up 3% from 4,135 in the preceding seven-day period, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
The same day, Chiba Prefecture confirmed 1,609 new cases, rewriting the daily record high for the fourth consecutive day. Kanagawa Prefecture also logged a daily record high of 2,584 cases, exceeding 2,000 for the fourth consecutive day.
