Tokyo logged 1,629 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, down 1,280 from the same day in the previous week.
This is the 16th consecutive day that the number was lower than seven days before.
There were 260 seriously ill COVID-19 patients in the capital, down seven from Monday, and 16 deaths linked to the disease, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
The seven-day moving average of new cases was 2,231, down 37% from 3,521 in the preceding seven-day period.
The number of seriously ill patients from the disease nationwide hit 2,209 on Tuesday, up 11 from the previous day, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry. This was the first increase since Saturday.
