
Tokyo reported 1,149 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, topping 1,000 for the first time in two months.
Wednesday's figure was up 229 from the same day in the previous week.
The tally was higher than the figure logged on the same day in the previous week for the 25th consecutive day, the metropolitan government said. The last time the daily number exceeded 1,000 was May 13, when the Japan capital saw 1,010 new cases.
The seven-day moving average came to 823.3, an increase of 30.3% from the preceding seven-day period's average of 631.7.
The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients dropped four from Tuesday to 54.
