Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike announced on Tuesday that the metropolitan government will set a goal of having all new cars sold in Tokyo be post-gasoline vehicles by 2030. It is part of an effort to transition to electrified vehicles, including electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. For motorcycles, the transition target is by 2035.
Koike made the announcement in response to a question from a representative at the Tokyo metropolitan assembly on Tuesday. As for post-gasoline vehicles, the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry aims to make all new cars sold in Japan electric by the mid-2030s. The metropolitan government hopes to lead this trend by achieving the goal ahead of time.
The metropolitan government will also try to create momentum for the introduction of post-gasoline vehicles by holding races for electric vehicles. "We will strongly promote zero-emission vehicles, which can be called the new industrial revolution, " said Koike.
