When do the Tokyo Olympics events start? Athletics and swimming schedule

After being postponed for a year, the 2020 Olympic Games are upon us.

Once again, we'll be treated to watching some of the world's best athletes battle it out and try to claim gold, across 28 sports.

This is actually the first time the games have been rescheduled, although they have previously been cancelled altogether.

This is also the second of three consecutive Olympics to be held in Asia, following on from the 2018 winter games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and before the 2022 winter Olympics in Beijing, China.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics start date

The 2020 Olympics is actually started on Wednesday, July 21 at 9am local time, which is 1am BST.

That first event was a softball match between Australia and Japan, with two further softball matches and six football matches to follow later in the day.

The athletics events begin on Friday, July 30 and will last 10 days. The women’s 100m final is on Saturday, July 31, and the men follow on Sunday, August 1.

The swimming events run from Saturday, July 24, to Sunday, August 1, then attention moves to the velodrome for seven days of track cycling events from Monday 2. The closing ceremony begins at 8pm Tokyo time on Sunday, August 8.

When is the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony?

The opening ceremony is to be held on Friday, July 23 at 12pm BST.

It is expected to last around three hours.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics end date

The 2020 Olympics will come to a close on Sunday, August 8.

It will close with a number of events across athletics, basketball, boxing, cycling, handball, gymnastics, volleyball, and water polo.
