
Bethany Shriever wins Gold in women’s Bmx on Olympic debut
Day eight of Tokyo 2020 is well underway and all eyes are currently on the athletics track.
Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah wins 100m final as Jamaica takes home bronze, silver and gold. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finished in second place while and Shericka Jackson took home bronze.
Ms Thompson-Herah set an Olympic record, running the race a time of 10.61sec.
Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith was knocked out of the women’s 100m at the semi-final stage. However, there was joy for Asher-Smith’s teammate, Daryll Neita, who finished third in a separate semi-final and qualified as one of the fastest losers with a time of 11.00 seconds.
The two UK sprinters were bidding to become the first British female to win an individual sprint medal at the Olympics since 1960.
Earlier, Caeleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky added to the tally of United States’ gold medals, while Australia’s winning streak continued with Kaylee McKeown winning the 200m backstroke for their seventh gold in the pool. Britain claimed swimming gold in the new 4x100m mixed medley relay with a world record of 3 minutes, 37.58 seconds.
Simone Biles pulled out of gymnastics finals for the vault and the uneven bars. It was announced that the Team USA superstar, who has not performed since pulling out of the team all-around event to deal with her mental health, withdrew from the events “after further consultation with medical staff.”
Team GB took bronze in women’s windsurfing as Emma Wilson came in third after China’s Lu Yunxiu, who took the gold.
