Toilets closed again after vandal attack as thousands descend on resort

A troubled set of toilets in Weston-super-Mare have been forced to close due to vandalism - just as thousands of visitors descend on the resort.

Vandals targeted the toilets at Grove Park over the Bank Holiday weekend, blocking the toilet basins and sinks in all three cubicles.

The damage was discovered by cleaners.

The conveniences have become a magnet for anti social behaviour in recent years and are used by drug addicts and homeless people as a place to stay overnight.

Discarded needles are regularly found - often shoved down toilet bowls and drains - and human excrement smeared on the walls.

The loos have also been subject to numerous vandal attacks and have had to close on several occasions for repairs to be carried out.

The drainage system has also had to be flushed out by specialist contractors because of the needles before the block could be opened again.

The level of damage at the site is now being assessed and it is not yet known when the toilets will re-open again.

A spokesman for Weston Town Council said: “Over the bank holiday weekend, Grove Park public toilets were vandalised.

“Cleaners found both toilet basins and the sinks in all three cubicles had been deliberately blocked.

“It is currently unclear the full extent of the damage as this could mean that drain pipes, as well as sinks and toilets, would need to be replaced.

“Weston Town Council is talking to drain experts on what to do to resolve this situation.

"We regret that the public toilets will be closed until further notice.

“The nearest alternative toilets are in the Sovereign Centre.”

In the past the loos, which cost 20 pence to use, were run by attendants who were based on the site.

They carried out the cleaning duties and kept the conveniences spick and span and trouble free.

Currently the council has an agreement with contractor Healthmatic to look after its five sets of public conveniences in the town.

The town council is responsible for the loos at Grove Park, Clarence Park, Ashcombe Park, Uphill Links Road and The Maltings at Worle High Street.

It took over six sets of public toilets in 2013 to save them from closure as North Somerset Council withdrew its funding to save £400,000 per year.

North Somerset Council still operates the remaining toilets in the town - including along the seafront - employing a contractor to take care of them.
