Toilet to takeaway proposal for 'eyesore' Irvine loos gets green light

Plans to convert an 'eyesore' Irvine toilet block into a takeaway have been approved.

An application was lodged in March to change the use of the derelict public loos in the East Road car park to a hot food facility with small sit-in area.

Supporting documents submitted on behalf of applicant David Munro said the area would greatly benefit from a repurposing of the building which has lain empty since 2017 and was described as an 'eyesore'.

No objections were raised against the proposal and this week North Ayrshire Council planners granted permission for the project, subject to one condition.

A decision report issued by the local authority said: "The proposal to re-use the vacant unit in the manner proposed would contribute to the 'town centre first' principle through new investment in existing premises.

"There are other takeaway food outlets within Irvine town centre but none immediately beside the application site.

"As such, it is considered that the proposal would contribute to the aims of the placemaking policy in terms of supporting Irvine town centre, making it more welcoming, safe and pleasant for customers, residents and the wider public domain without harming the amenity of the area.

"The proposal also demonstrates the adaptability of the building at a location which is easy to access on foot and by public transport. By converting the building to another use, it would be resource efficient as compared with new build."

The report continued: "In conclusion, the proposal would accord with the provisions of the development plan and planning permission should therefore be approved.

"A condition should be attached to require the submission of final details for the proposed ventilation system and to ensure that the system is installed and operated to safeguard the amenity of the area."

It is proposed that the takeaway's opening hours would be 7am to 10pm from Monday to Saturday and 9am to 10pm on Sundays.
