Toilet smell sensor warns you of nasty odours before you open the bathroom door

Anyone who’s used a public toilet is likely to have had a grim experience involving some gag-inducing smells.

But the days of being met by a wave of disgusting fumes could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to Charmin’s latest device.

The toilet paper firm has unveiled a toilet smell sensor dubbed SmellSense, which warns you of any nasty odours before you open the bathroom door.

The handy sensor was revealed at the CES technology conference in Las Vegas, alongside several other toilet-based innovations.

Rob Reinerman, Brand Director at Charmin, said: “At Charmin, we’re always on a mission to bring people a better bathroom experience, and while that starts with the best [toilet paper], Charmin GoLab allows us to finally expand beyond just the seat.

“The concepts we’re bringing to CES are a playful way to showcase our relentless obsession with helping people Enjoy the Go now and into the future.”

The sensor is designed to detect carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide - two chemicals linked to nasty toilet smells.

It will then notify you via a GO/NO GO display on the status of the stench, and whether or not it’s safe to go in.

Charmin also unveiled a toilet robot called the RollBot, which is designed to deliver you a fresh roll of toilet paper (Charmin)

Charmin also unveiled a toilet robot called the RollBot, which is designed to deliver you a fresh roll of toilet paper, as well as a premium portaloo experience.

The experience, called V.I.Pee, would feature at events or concerts, and features an Oculus Rift VR headset, allowing users to continue watching the action while on the loo!

Unfortunately, it remains unclear when, or even if, these ideas will become readily available - watch this space!
