Toews gets game winner, hat trick in Hawks win over Blues

ST. LOUIS_The St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks renewed their rivalry on Saturday and the Blues got their first point but not their first win, falling in overtime 5-4 at Enterprise Center. Jonathan Toews scored on a breakaway, his third goal of the game, with 2:52 to go in the extra period after Vince Dunn had a shot blocked.

Vladimir Tarasenko had two goals for the Blues.

The Blues took a 2-0 lead in the first period, fell behind 3-2 in the second and then rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the third on goals 22 seconds apart by Tarasenko (of course) and Chris Butler (not of course). That lead lasted barely three minutes before Toews got his second goal of the game to tie the game at 4-4 with 13:01 to play in the third.

The Blues had a power play starting with 7:13 to go in the third and they had the puck in the Blackhawks' zone for the entire two minutes and then some, but couldn't score.

The Blues started with goals by Colton Parayko and Tarasenko, before Chicago got goals from Toews, Patrick Kane and Marcus Kruger. Ryan O'Reilly had assists on the first four goals of the season for the Blues, seeing his streak finally snapped on Butler's goal, his first in the NHL since March 7, 2015.

Tarasenko's second goal provided some delayed gratification. He looked frustrated as Chicago goalie Cam Ward reached back to clear the puck from behind him. Play continued and 29 seconds later, the horn sounded. That usually means that the play has been reviewed in Toronto and had been confirmed to have gone over the line. The overhead camera angle indeed showed that the puck had crossed the line before Ward had cleared it, giving the Blues the tying goal.
