Toddler twins died when drunk mum 'covered them with thick blanket to put them to sleep'

A mum has avoided jail after her eight-month-old twins died while she tried to put them to sleep.

Valeria Khakimova and her brother Kirill Khakimov were teething and crying and their mum Ludmila Khakimova could not calm them down, according to reports.

The mum-of-four was drinking alcohol alone and the babies' crying was irritating her, a court heard.

She reportedly decided 'to muffle the noise' and covered the twins with a thick blanket 'thinking it would help them to fall asleep'.

After that she continued her drinking party before going to sleep late at night.

When Khakimova, 26, woke up in the morning and checked on the twins they were not breathing.

It happened in the small town of Abay, central Karaganda region of Kazakhstan on February 29.

She told local media: ''I walked up to their cots. Both of them were lying on their backs and were blue. I called an ambulance.''

Paramedics arrived and confirmed the babies were dead. The following examinations showed they died of suffocation after being covered with the blanket, according to Karaganda Regional Court's records.

Ludmila Khakimova was charged with negligence manslaughter and sentenced to two years and a half of supervised probation.

A court spokesperson told: ''Khakimova covered the twins with a thick blanket and fell asleep. In the morning she discovered the children showed no signs of life. Examinations showed they suffocated to death under the blanket.

''The court found out the mother was drunk during the incident.''

Local prosecutor's office say the mother avoided jail because she cooperated with the police and plead guilty.

Court spokeswoman Erkesh Mauken added: ''The woman has no previous convictions and regrets about what happened.''

Khakimova has also been allowed to raise her other two little children despite the incident, say local media.
