Toddler suffers second-degree burns after pulling mum's coffee mug off windowsill

A toddler has suffered agonising second degree burns on her face and body after pulling a mug of her mum's freshly brewed coffee off a windowsill.

Little Orla Capstick, then aged one, had only just learned to walk, so mum Vicki, didn't worry about popping a full mug on the ledge.

She left the room to take her other daughter to the toilet, but seconds later, the tot managed to cross the room, reach up and pull the hot liquid all over herself.

Vicki, 38, and husband Gavin, took her up to the bath, running cold water all over her body while an air ambulance rushed to their home, Wales Online reports.

Orla, now three, sustained second degree burns on 25% of her body - including her face, shoulder and chest.

But thanks to the air ambulance and her quick-thinking parents, she didn't need a skin graft.

Little Orla has raised more than £2,000 for Great North Air Ambulance Service, to say thank you, by cycling an incredible 26 miles in three weeks.

Primary school teacher Vicki, from Tebay, Cumbria, said: "I had just made the coffee when one of my other daughters needed the toilet so I put it on the windowsill, went off with her and then the scream happened.

"Orla was only just learning to walk but within seconds, she'd managed to get from one side of the front room to the other, reached up onto the windowsill and pulled the full mug of coffee all over herself.

"My husband Gavin was in the front room with Orla, listening to another one of our daughters reading her book and he quickly picked her up and ran up the stairs.

"We immediately put her in the bath and covered her in cold water to release the burn which was all over her left shoulder, chest and the top of her left arm.

"Within 10 minutes, we had an ambulance crew with us, and they had no sooner got into our house when the air ambulance landed in the field behind our house."

The quick response of the ambulance team meant that Orla received the treatment she needed as soon as possible, saving her skin and leaving her with no scars at all.

Mum Vicki said: "The air ambulance staff were great, they were really reassuring throughout the whole thing, really calm and talked us through everything they were doing.

"Panic had set in when they arrived and I was so anxious as I'm really not good in a hospital situation but they were just amazing."

Suffering second degree burns across a quarter of her body, Orla was rushed to Carlisle Hospital in the air ambulance.

Following the incident in June 2018, Orla had her burns cleaned and bandaged at the hospital, returning every day for two weeks to have her dressings changed.

The brave little girl only learnt to ride her bike this year after following her older sisters Mia, seven, and Aoife, five, on their cycle rides.

The family decided to use her hobby as a way to raise money to thank her heroes.

Her mum said: "We always wanted to give the air ambulance service something back and as it was Orla who received the treatment, it was quite nice that she be the one to do it as well.

"Orla can tell everyone how much money she has made and how far she has biked - you don't get many two year olds who can ride a bike and with the extra time over lockdown, we thought it was the perfect thing to do.

"Orla is quite a little character! She's certainly a determined, independent woman already and we are so proud of her.

"She never complained once - some days it was raining and she just went in her raincoat and splashed through the puddles, and other days her sisters would stop and play but she'd just say 'I'm doing my mile!' and carry on.

"We were going to do 26 miles over 30 days but Orla was that determined, she wanted to go out every single day so she actually managed to do it in 21 days!"
