Toddler strangled to death by blind at home in tragedy - a coroner has warned 'more children could die' unless action is taken

A toddler died after he was strangled by a blind cord in a bedroom, an inquest has concluded.

Joey Walker, two, became trapped in a looped cable installed in a bedroom at his home in Denton by a previous tenant.

The coroner who dealt with the tragic case has written to the government to warn that more children could die if preventative action isn't taken.

Joey was found unresponsive by his mother in a bedroom of their home on Prince Edward Avenue on April 5 last year.

After finding her son, his mum dialled 999 and began giving her son lifesaving CPR.

Paramedics arrived and Joey was admitted to the intensive care unit at Manchester Children’s Hospital.

He died 18 days later, having suffered irreversible brain injuries.

An inquest found that the toddler died of a hypoxic brain injury and out of hospital cardiac caused by strangulation.

Senior coroner Chris Morris concluded that Joey's death was the consequence of an accident.

An inquest report said that the blind cord had been installed by a previous tenant at the rented house.

Writing to housing secretary Robert Jenrick and council bosses in Tameside, the coroner said: "It is a matter of concern that residential landlords are not currently subject to any obligation to inspect window coverings.

"In my opinion action should be taken to prevent future deaths."

A police investigation concluded there were no suspicious circumstances. No arrests were made.

The coroner's report added: "The investigation established the blind cord which had been installed by a previous tenant was not a functioning safety cord which would break if undue pressure was placed on it."
