Toddler still fighting for life after being hit by car in city centre

A two-year-old boy is still fighting for his life after being struck by a car in Liverpool city centre earlier this week.

The toddler remains in a critical condition in hospital after the serious crash in Duke Street which happened at around 7.30pm on Wednesday, June 9.

Several police cars and an ambulance rushed to the scene and the street was cordoned off after the child was hit by a VW Golf.

The driver stopped at the scene.

Merseyside Police today (Friday) confirmed the two-year-old was still in a "critical condition."

Following the incident, a spokesperson said yesterday: "We are continuing to appeal for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre.

"At around 7.30pm, a report was received to the ambulance service of a collision on Duke Street involving a VW Golf and a two-year-old boy. Officers were alerted a short time later.

"The child was taken to hospital and is currently in a critical but stable condition. The driver stopped at the scene to assist with enquiries. Extensive CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries are ongoing."

Witnesses were urged to come forward.

Matrix Roads Policing Inspector Carl McNulty said: "The boy's family are being supported by officers in what is obviously an upsetting time.

"We're keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident and has yet to come forward."

Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured anything on CCTV or dashcam is asked to call police on 0151 777 5747, email: rpiu@merseyside.police.uk, or via @MerPolCC on Twitter, or 'Merseyside Police Contact Centre' on Facebook, with reference 21000404008.
