Toddler rushed to Alder Hey on Christmas Day finally opens his presents

A toddler rushed to hospital on Christmas Day with a ruptured appendix has finally opened his presents.

Josh Platt, two, from Birkenhead , was rushed to Alder Hey Children's Hospital on December 25 for emergency surgery after catching a nasty infection.

The youngster had complained of stomach ache on December 21, but after taking him to a separate hospital his parents, Aimee and Rikky, were told to just give him Calpol.

But after his temperature soared, they rushed back to hospital where he was transferred to Alder Hey on Christmas Day.

Josh underwent surgery to have his appendix removed and two long line cannulas inserted.

Aimee, who also has a four-year-old son, Jack, said: "Christmas Day is all about family but I just wanted to make sure he was okay.

"Rikky and Jack stayed at home and opened presents, but Jack was just asking for Josh's whereabouts the whole time."

Following the operation, Josh had two weeks of recovery in the children's ward.

Aimee said: "Alder Hey were amazing, they looked after both the patient and the parents.

"I was a wreck and they supported me."

On January 7, Josh was discharged from Alder Hey and allowed back home to celebrate the delayed Christmas.

Aimee said: "He opened some of his presents on the night he came back and then he celebrated Christmas Day on January 8.

"He had a really good time. He loves How to Train Your Dragon, so he got a couple of dragons.

"He also got a bean bag to use when he's watching television."

Josh is recovering well and will return to nursery next week.

Aimee said: "He is doing really well, he still needs to put a bit more weight on but he's back to his normal self."
