Toddler hit by car spends third birthday fighting for life

A toddler has spent his third birthday fighting for his life in hospital after being struck by a car in Liverpool city centre.

The boy remains in hospital after the serious crash in Duke Street which happened at around 7.30pm on Wednesday, June 9.

Police and The North West Ambulance Service took the child to hospital for assessment. services rushed to the scene and the street was cordoned off after the child, who was two at the time, was hit by a VW Golf.

The driver stopped at the scene.

Merseyside Police today (Tuesday, June 22) confirmed the now three-year-old boy "remains very poorly in hospital but is improving".

Following the incident, a spokesperson said yesterday: "We are continuing to appeal for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre.

"At around 7.30pm, a report was received to the ambulance service of a collision on Duke Street involving a VW Golf and a two-year-old boy. Officers were alerted a short time later.

"The child was taken to hospital and is currently in a critical but stable condition. The driver stopped at the scene to assist with enquiries. Extensive CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries are ongoing."

Witnesses were urged to come forward.

Matrix Roads Policing Inspector Carl McNulty said: "The boy's family are being supported by officers in what is obviously an upsetting time.

"We're keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident and has yet to come forward."
