Mother reverses into toddler in Melbourne driveway

Police said it appeared the girl ran behind the car as it was being reversed.

A toddler is in a serious condition after her mother reversed a car into her in the driveway of a home in Melbourne's north-west.

Victoria Police Sergeant Kel Cannon said the one-year-old girl's mother was "distraught" after the girl was hit at Avondale Heights just before 8:00pm.

It is believed the girl ran behind the car as it was reversing.

She was taken to Royal Children's Hospital with serious injuries.

"Unfortunately a lady has been reversing outside her driveway and it appears a young child has run behind the vehicle and has been struck and knocked to the ground," Sergeant Cannon said.

"It's coming up to Christmas and this is not the sort of thing that anybody wishes on anybody.

"We just ask that people, when they're moving their cars around the home, to be mindful of where their children are and make sure they're being supervised if they're anywhere near a vehicle when it could be moving.

"This is not what anyone wants to be experiencing."

Police are continuing to investigate.
