Toddler found dead in van outside Florida day care

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. _ A toddler was found dead inside a van Monday outside an Oakland Park day care center, according to news reports.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said Monday afternoon it was conducting a death investigation at 3140 NW 21st Ave., which is the site of Ceressa's Daycare & Preschool. The Sheriff's Office hasn't released additional details.

WSVN-TV and WPLG-TV reported a child was found dead in the van.

Detectives were photographing a white van parked in the day care's driveway. It was shielded by an Oakland Park Fire Rescue ambulance and a crime-scene van from the Broward Sheriff's Office. A black SUV from the medical examiner's office was parked nearby. Deputies just unfolded a folding fence and tarp to shield from view the transfer of the child from the van to the ME's vehicle.

Two plainclothes detectives walked across the street to where people were gathering. They asked if any parents were there. They gathered up about three people and took them aside.

The Oakland Park Fire Rescue Department referred questions about the case to the Sheriff's Office, which remained on site late Monday. Authorities were waiting to notify next of kin before releasing additional information to the public, sources said.

Meanwhile, officials were sending parents to an alternate site so that they could pick up their children from day care.
