Toddler fighting for life in Irish hospital after contracting coronavirus

A toddler is fighting for life in intensive care in an Irish hospital after contracting coronavirus.

The tot is under the age of four, and they are the youngest Covid-19 patient to be admitted to ICU in Ireland since the outbreak began here.

This is according to the latest report from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

The incident was notified to the HPSC between Wednesday and Saturday last week.

The gender, exact age or location of the patient has not been released by health officials.

It is also not known whether the youngster has an underlying condition or not.

In total, three children under the age of 14 have been admitted to ICU with the killer bug since the first case was recorded here.

Since the pandemic began, 26 kids under the age of four have been hospitalised due to the illness.

The vast majority of coronavirus patients who have required treatment in intensive care have been over the age of 55.

Currently, there are six people with Covid-19 in ICUs across the country, while 48 people with the virus are being treated in hospital.

This is significantly down from the peak in mid-April that saw 881 patients being treated in hospital, and 155 in intensive care.
