Toddler drowns in public pool in remote NT community

Kintore is a remote Indigenous community in the Western Desert in the Northern Territory.

A toddler has drowned in a public swimming pool in the remote community of Kintore, about 530 kilometres west of Alice Springs.

In a statement, NT Police said local workers in the community found the child unresponsive earlier today.

Police were notified about midday but it is not yet known exactly when the incident occurred.

"Attempts to resuscitate the child were unsuccessful," the statement read.

"Detectives are travelling to the community to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident."

Known locally as Walungurru, the remote Indigenous community of Kintore is home to about 400 people.

The community is part of the MacDonnell Regional Council and has a clinic, school, art centre, police station and shopping centre.

A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
