AYUTTHAYA: A one-year-old girl died after her van smashed into the back of a pickup truck in Wang Noi district on early Wednesday morning. The girl and her family were returning from a Father's Day visit to her dad.

The girl, her mother Nilobol Thongsiri, 20, and five other relatives -- all natives of Yasothon province -- had travelled to Bangkok to visit the girl's father, a private at a military camp in the capital.

They then headed back to the northeastern province of Yasothon late Tuesday night.

Police said the white Toyota van, driven by Praphai Meechai, 58, smashed at high speed into the black Toyota pickup truck on Phahon Yothin Highway in tambon Lamsai at about 1am on Wednesday.

All seven people in the van were seriously hurt. The toddler later succumbed to her injuries at Wang Noi Hospital. Other people in the pickup truck were slightly injured.

Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
