Toddler dies after tractor incident

The toddler died after being struck by a phosphate spreader, police said.

A toddler has died after an incident involving a tractor trailer near Warrnambool in Victoria's south-west on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to an address at Naringal, east of Warrnambool, about 11:00am.

Police said the tractor was pulling a trailer carrying a phosphate spreader when the spreader fell off and struck the child, causing "fatal injuries".

"The circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated by police and WorkSafe," police spokeswoman Natalie Dean said.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Malcolm Ward, the pastor at Naringal Baptist Church, said the death would have a profound effect on the small, close-knit farming community.

"It will impact everyone, everyone would feel for the family and be really saddened by the event," he said.

Mr Ward said the community will rally around the family.

"Rural communities support each other as best they can and I'm sure there'll be lots of support offered."
