Toddler dies after organs failed when she 'choked on piece of bread'

A toddler died after choking on a piece of bread and losing consciousness , police say.

The two-year-old girl was at her babysitter's home when the chunk of bread become lodged in her airway.

She suffered multiple organ failure and was dashed to hospital.

But medics in Selayang, Malaysia, were unable to save her and the tot died four days later.

"At the emergency ward, the medical officer found a piece of bread during the resuscitation process," police spokesman Samsor Maarof said.

He revealed the girl died as a result of hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) with multiple organ failure.

It is unclear at this stage if the authorities are investigating further into the girl’s death.

HIE occurs as a result of a lack of oxygen and/or blood to the brain.

It is a common symptom after a person chokes.

In Sevenoaks, Kent recently, a pensioner suffered similar symptoms after struggling on a roast dinner .

David Barnes, 77, was halfway through the meal at The Royal Oak Beefeater iin the town when he suddenly felt short of breath.

And the former telephone engineer fell out of his chair prompting staff to call emergency services.

He was sadly declared dead hours later.
