Toddler died on small peninsula campsite after being hit by car, according to reports

The death of a toddler who was hit by a car towing a caravan is understood to have happened at a small campsite on Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula, according to reports.

The tragic incident took place in the Helston area of Cornwall at around 12.50pm on Wednesday, May 12.

It was reported that a collision had taken place between a vehicle and a child. The child, a 20-month-old girl from Nottingham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is understood to have taken place at Little Trethvas Holidays' campsite, between Ruan Major and The Lizard village in Cornwall, Cornwall Live reports.

The campsite was approached but staff declined to comment.

In a statement released on Thursday, May 13, a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police and paramedics were called to a campsite in the Helston area following a report of a collision between a vehicle and a child at around 12.50pm on Wednesday 12 May.

"Tragically, the child, a 20-month-old girl from the Nottingham area, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her family is being supported by specially-trained officers.

"The collision involved a car towing a caravan and happened on private land.

The air ambulance also attended the incident. The coroner has been informed and an investigation by officers from the specialist Roads Policing Team continues."

Helston is situated at the northern end of the Lizard Peninsula, approximately 12 miles east of Penzance and 9 miles south-west of Falmouth.
