A little girl has been left with severe bruises after falling into an uncovered sewer as her mother watched in horror.
CCTV footage released by police in Russia shows the toddler walking towards the manhole shortly after two workers left the site without putting the lid back on.
The mother turned around to see her daughter disappear and alerted the two workers to rescue the child.
One of the workers jumped into the 10-foot deep sewer in a desperate bid to free the girl.
Local reports stated the two-year-old girl was then rushed to hospital with severe bruises on her right hand.
She is being treated and is not in life-threatening condition.
Police officers responded to the scene for a criminal investigation against the workers.
Local Investigative Committee spokesman Oleg Dmitriev told reporters: "The sewer was left open without a safety fence.
"The girl was exiting the apartment block following her mother and fell into the sewer.
"We are treating this as work performance that does not meet the requirements for health and safety."
The workers could be given a fine or handed up to two years in prison if found guilty.
