Todd Monken will collaborate with other coaches on Browns offense

Last year, the friction between offensive coordinator Todd Haley and head coach Hue Jackson made waves from the get-go. Haley wanted to do things his way, Jackson wanted Haley to acquiesce to his superior job title, and it just never worked.

That won’t be a problem for the 2019 Cleveland Browns. New offensive coordinator Todd Monken believes in listening to his fellow coaches and taking input for how to make the product better.

“There are a lot of idea guys. I will be one of them,” Monken said during last week’s OTAs. “Do I think all of our coaches on offense will have their thumbprints on it? I would hope so. I would hope that all of our coaches feel free to have input and they have.”

The open and collaborative nature of head coach Freddie Kitchens is one of the facets of the Browns job which really appealed to Monken.

“That is a good sign where you have a number of guys that can have input into what you do on a weekly basis,” Monken said. “I think it builds a better staff when everybody has a piece of it as opposed to ‘Hey, here is what we are doing’ and you lay it out for somebody. That is what I liked when I met Freddie.”

Monken comes from Tampa Bay, where his Buccaneers finished 3rd in the NFL in yards and 12th in scoring in 2018, his one season serving solely as an offensive coordinator.
