Todd Gurley wishes Rams paid Malcolm Brown ‘a little bit more money’

The Los Angeles Rams are officially back together. The team reported for the beginning of their offseason program Monday, and running Todd Gurley met with the media to give his first presser since the Super Bowl.

The Rams won’t have C.J. Anderson back after he signed with the Lions, but they will have Malcolm Brown in the mix again. The Lions also tried to sign Brown away, but the Rams matched the restricted free agent’s offer sheet. When asked for his reaction to the Rams matching the offer, Gurley sounded excited about it.

“I was happy, Malc’s my boy. We came in together, same year,” Gurley said. He then joked that he wished the Rams “would’ve paid him a little bit more money.”

“But that’s neither here nor there, I just got to speak up for my boy,” Gurley cracked. “I’m super happy he’s back though.”

When asked if Brown could step up and play a similar type role as Anderson did down the stretch last season, Gurley said he thinks Brown is ready. “If I go out, he’s doing the exact same thing, if not he can do it better. Malc’s a great running back,” Gurley said humbly.

“It doesn’t really matter who is in the game. Me, Malcolm, J.D. (Justin Davis), or John Kelly. That’s why we’ve got such a great offense. It doesn’t really matter about a player. It’s about the whole system,” Gurley continued.

Gurley is going to face questions about his knee all offseason. He has insisted he’ll be fine for the season, but he also sounds quite confident in the rest of the Rams’ running backs if he isn’t able to carry the full load.

Even if he is fully healthy, the Rams will likely try to reduce his workload a bit to put less tread on his tires. Brown will almost certainly be more involved than he has been the past couple of seasons, and Gurley is happy to have him back and fully healthy after Brown missed the end of last season with a shoulder injury. “I’m glad he’s not with Detroit,” Gurley concluded.
