Todd Gurley joining Falcons on 1-year deal

After being released by the Rams on Wednesday, running back Todd Gurley has agreed to sign with the Falcons on a one-year deal.

The Broncos are believed to be in the market for a running back to complement Phillip Lindsay. Denver had preliminary interest in David Johnson before he was traded to the Texans, which increased speculation that the Broncos might be planning to bring in a big-name running back.

If Denver is looking to add a running back, it won’t be Gurley.

Gurley (6-1, 224 pounds) was selected by the Rams with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft out of Georgia. He quickly emerged as one of the top running backs in the league, earning a Pro Bowl nod after rushing for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns as a rookie.

Over the last five seasons, Gurley has gained 7,494 yards from scrimmage and has scored 70 touchdowns. Gurley has a career average of 4.3 yards per carry but he averaged just 3.8 yards per carry in 2019. The 25-year-old running back already has arthritis in his left knee, which may have contributed to his drop in production last season.

A three-time Pro Bowler and a two-time first-team All-Pro, Gurley ranks sixth on the Rams’ all-time rushing list (5,404 yards) and is tied for first in rushing touchdowns (58) with Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk.
