NEW YORK _ Mets third baseman Todd Frazier has been placed on the disabled list with a strained left rib cage muscle. He received a cortisone shot Monday morning.
Frazier first experienced discomfort in his first at-bat Sunday, and the pain intensified in his third at-bat, which he described as "really uncomfortable."
This is his second time on the disabled list after seven healthy seasons prior to this year. He also missed time with a left hamstring strain.
He is hoping he won't be sidelined too long, and he can take advantage of the four days off next week due to the All-Star break.
"It's not fun at all," Frazier said prior to Monday's doubleheader. Keep on trying to get better and hopefully this isn't a long ordeal."
The Mets called up utility man Ty Kelly to take Frazier's spot on the roster rather than promoting hot-hitting prospect Jeff McNeil.
"He's obviously an option for us," Callaway said. "One thing we have with him is he's purely a second baseman and Cabrera is holding that down for us right now."
