Todd Cantwell fired Joey Barton Rangers transfer reminder as playmaker told formula that would see him 'fail miserably'

Former Rangers star Richard Foster has warned new Ibrox recruit Todd Cantwell he shouldn't expect an easy ride in the Scottish Premiership.

Cantwell came through the youth ranks at Norwich City and progressed to the first team at Carrow Road, making his first team debut six years ago helping them to promotion to the Premier League and making an impression on the English top flight, but has struggled for form over the last 18 months. The 24-year-old will now look to kickstart his career north of the border, but Foster has some concerns over the move.

The pundit pointed to comparisons to Joey Barton - who proved to be a major flow north of the border after leaving Burnley for a switch to Ibrox. Barton found himself back at Turf Moor after less than six months in Govan, and Foster reckons Cantwell should learn from the mistakes of the England cap.

Foster told PLZ Soccer: "It all depends on the player himself and what he wants from it. If he comes up here, thinks it's going to be easy and he will be the best player straight away then you'll fail miserably. We've seen that before with Joey Barton being the biggest name to do that.

"We had Soni Aluko at Aberdeen, a youth player at England, and he was a fantastic player at Aberdeen then Rangers before going down south. I think if he comes up here and is appreciative of our league, and knows how it tough it can be then I think he can probably do well.

"His stats recently haven't been great this season and I don't know much about him as a player. It's where do they play him in the team? Do they play him as one of the three in midfield or as one of the tens?

"There's no doubt that he's a talented playe. But whether he fits into the Rangers team, and what attitude he comes up with - only he can answer."
