Todd Cantwell branded Rangers 'cheat' after Motherwell flashpoint as former SFA ref unleashes in furious ban demand

Raging former referee Steve Conroy has demanded Rangers star Todd Cantwell receive a retrospective red card to match Callum Slattery's Motherwell ban.

Slattery was shown his second yellow card of the afternoon by referee Nick Walsh when Cantwell went down clutching his face after contact from the Motherwell midfielder during the FIr Park showdown, leaving boss Stuart Kettlewell fuming with the reaction of the Rangers playmaker with the Ibrox side leading 4-2. The was no way back for the Steelmen in the Scottish Premiership showdown, but Conroy now wants to see action taken by the SFA against the Englishman.

While Conroy conceded a case could be argued that Slattery should have received a second booking from whistler Walsh, his accused Cantwell of "conning" the referee. He pointed to another incident involving Reo Hatate to back up his argument, when he called for a ban for the Celtic star after taking a tumble under pressure from Hearts star Orestis Kiomourtzoglou.

Asked about the Rangers star on he Get Involved Referee podcast, Conroy said: "He cheated. It's debatable whether you think the Motherwell defender was guilty of an offence in that one.

"It wasn't violent and it wasn't a red card. It wasn't excessive force, maybe? But he put his hand on him, and to me it looked like he placed it very gently on him. In the Chris Sutton days, what did he used to say? That he was just marking his territory.

"That seemed to be the extent of it for me, but in this day and age if you raise your hands you're taking the chance. I don't have an issue with that one way or the other.

"I wouldn't have cautioned him, personally. But I don't have an issue with him being cautioned for that, and if he is then it's a red card.

"The player went down disgracefully. Cantwell was every bit as much of a cheat as the Hatate one was last week was a cheat.

"It was disgusting and it was disgraceful. He is conning and cheating every single one of us, and he should get the same ban as everyone else."
