The New York Jets have hired the Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator Todd Bowles as their new head coach, according to reports. ESPN’s Josina Anderson says Bowles texted her to confirm he would be accepting the job.
On the face of it, the appointment is a like-for-like replacement with Bowles bringing the same strong defensive skills as his predecessor, Rex Ryan. However, unlike Ryan, Bowles is likely to attract less controversy off the field. In any case, the two men will meet next season – earlier this week Ryan was appointed the head coach of the Jets’ divisional rivals, the Buffalo Bills.
Bowles is believed to have accepted a four-year contract. The news came just hours after the Jets had appointed Houston Texans scouting director Mike Maccagnan as their new general manager.
Bowles has won widespread praise for turning Arizona’s defense into one of the best units in the NFL.
