Todd Boehly tipped to rival Jeff Bezos in £5.35bn NFL purchase raising major Chelsea concerns

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has been tipped to rival Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to purchase NFL side Washing Commanders.

The Commanders announced that current owner Dan Snyder had hired Bank of America to explore the possibility of selling the team. However, it remains unclear if selling the entire team or just adding a minority partner to the mix is Snyder's preferred choice.

The statement released by the Commanders read: “Dan and Tanya Snyder and the Washington Commanders announced today that they have hired BofA Securities to consider potential transactions. The Snyders remain committed to the team, all of its employees and its countless fans to putting the best product on the field and continuing the work to set the gold standard for workplaces in the NFL.”

Boehly completed a £4.25bm takeover of Chelsea at the end of last season, ending Roman Abramovich's 19-year ownership of the club. The American businessman led the way in the summer with £278.4 million spent on new signings and is expected to be busy with further reinforcements over the next six months.

Boehly, who is also co-owner of Los Angeles Dodgers and the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, has been named as one of the early contenders to buy the Commanders by NBC Sports. The franchise is reportedly valued at roughly $5.6billion (£5.35bn), a mass increase from the $800million (£716.5m) Snyder brought the team for 23 years ago.

However, Bezos has also been a high-profile name tipped to buy the NFL team and reports have claimed he could partner with rap superstar Jay-Z in a bid to buy the Commanders. The American artist is worth an estimated $1.3bn (£1.16bn) by Forbes and could join one of the richest people in the world in Bezos.
