Todd Boehly takes difficult Chelsea transfer decision after Thomas Tuchel signs off on deal

Billy Gilmour is set to join Brighton and Hove Albion from Chelsea after the two clubs agreed upon a fee in the region of £9million for the Scotland international.

Gilmour's long-term future at Stamford Bridge has been uncertain throughout the summer. The academy graduate was included in the first-team squad that travelled to the United States for pre-season but was sent to join up with the club's Development Squad by Thomas Tuchel after the friendly against Club America in Las Vegas.

He linked back up with the senior squad after Chelsea returned but wasn't handed a squad number on the eve of the Premier League campaign and clubs both at home and abroad registered their interest in taking the 21-year-old on loan.

After a frustrating spell at Norwich City last term, Gilmour and his camp opted to remain patient in hope of the right move materalising. And in the past week, Brighton stepped forward. However, with the Seagulls having already brought in Levi Colwill from Chelsea on loan, a permanent move to the Amex Stadium was the only option.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly – acting as interim sporting director – is understood to have been reluctant to sanction a sale for Gilmour despite Tuchel giving his blessing to the midfielder's departure. However, the American billionaire has respected Gilmour's desire to leave and a deal with Brighton has been struck.
