Todd Boehly spared further Chelsea embarrassment as managerial decision finally pays off

Whilst Chelsea are still searching for a third permanent head coach under the new ownership group, former manager Thomas Tuchel is only able to pick up where he left off, and not in a good way either. The German has been back in management for a little over one month now but has struggled to overturn things from Julian Nagelsmann.

Bayern Munich made the choice to split with the highly-rated 35-year-old after their season faced a critical couple of weeks in the Bundesliga and Champions League. Following a blistering first 45 minutes for Tuchel and his side, going 3-0 up on their way to beating title rivals Borussia Dortmund 4-2, things have gone downhill.

Tuchel has now only seen one win in the last six games with three defeats coming. The German giants are out of Europe and the domestic cup whilst another loss, this time to Mainz, has left them out of control of their own fate in the Bundesliga. Dortmund could go one point clear if they win their game in hand with seven games to play.

Under Nagelsmann they had only lost two of their previous 16 league games as well as progressing past Paris Saint-Germain in Europe. He is believed to have fallen out with several of his players though, along with reportedly failing to live up to the image of how a Bayern coach should look and behave.

Despite results it appears that off-field problems were the biggest downfall for Nagelsmann. He did have a tricky start to the season, following on from a faltering run towards the end of last term too, but few expected the Champions League winner and fan favourite to lose his job so early.

Tuchel's biggest issue was that Boehly and Co wanted a manager more willing to work from top-down and within a structure rather than having more independence in the role. This was addressed by the American co-owner at a conference last year. "When you take over any business you have to make sure you are aligned with the people in the business," he said.

"And Tuchel is obviously extremely talented and obviously someone who had great success with Chelsea.

"Our vision for the club was to find a manager who really wanted to collaborate with us, a coach who really wanted to collaborate. Our goal is to bring a team together; all of that needs to be a well-oiled machine. The reality of our decision was that we weren't sure that Thomas saw it the same way we saw it.

"No one is right or wrong. We just didn't have a shared vision for the future. It wasn't about Zagreb. It was about the shared vision of what we wanted Chelsea to look like. It wasn't a decision that was made because of a single win or loss. It was a decision that we thought was the right vision for the club."

Tuchel has already had similar problems to his Chelsea days, including a lack of goals and cutting edge in the early Bayern days. His red card against Manchester City in midweek demonstrated his discontent and frustration once more.

Things at Chelsea have hardly gone smoothly in his absence but watching the 49-year-old succeed in Germany whilst the Blues search for another new head coach would have looked bad on the owners.

As it happens, things only look pretty bad rather than extremely bad.
