Todd Boehly handed £50m transfer windfall chance as Chelsea confirmed for FIFA competition

Chelsea could be set to receive a transfer windfall of up to £50million due to changes approved by FIFA on Tuesday afternoon. The football governing body pushed through changes to the Club World Cup format that will change it completely from June 2025 onwards.

The old format that the Blues won in 2021 consisted of seven teams, one from the winner of each of the six governing body's version of the Champions League and one from the host nation. That is now set to change, with an expanded 32-team format put in place for the future.

This new tournament will take place every four years during the summer months, playing out closer to an international format of the World Cup. The change is likely to bring in an extra revenue stream for those involved, adding extra fixtures to an already packed schedule.

While the rest of the team involved in the new format are yet to be revealed, there are some sides that have already qualified. One of those is Chelsea, who have done so through winning the Champions League in 2021, while Real Madrid join them after winning the competition last season.

The Times reports that due to their involvement in the competition, the Blues are guaranteed at least £25million in revenue as a boost. Should they make it further into the tournament, that prize money could soon double to as much as £50million, which could be useful for co-owner Todd Boehly.

Top clubs are often looking for ways to maximise their revenue streams, something the new ownership have been tasked with since taking over, and the club's part in the competition could play a huge role.
