Today we all learned Jimmy Butler’s name isn’t short for ‘James’

The NBA postseason is teaching us all kinds of stuff we didn’t know.

My colleague Andy Nesbitt just taught us all what the Portland Trail Blazers’ funky logo means, and now we just learned a fun fact about Philadelphia 76ers star Jimmy Butler: His first name isn’t short for “James.” It’s really Jimmy.

How did this come about, you ask? It all started with his head coach, Brett Brown, who informed the media that it was “James Butler” who was “the adult in the gym” during his Game 2 performance in a win over the Toronto Raptors (30 points, 11 rebounds, five assists). That’s a funny way of putting it and yet it works:

The best thing about it is Butler’s response:

“My name isn’t James. It literally is Jimmy.”

Indeed he was born Jimmy Butler III. Literally. And his Basketball Reference page informed me that his full nickname is “Jimmy G. Buckets,” but I would like to officially lobby for a new one: Literally Jimmy.
